Dear Friends,
It has been a long while since I've visited my own blog! Since starting graduate school at Georgia State, I haven't taken the time to reflect and update about my singing. As I quickly approach graduation (May 15th!!!), I feel it's a good time to "pick up the pen" again, as it were.
Maybe it would be best to start with current events and move backward? My Graduate Recital is scheduled for Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 7:30pm. My program includes pieces by Scarlatti, Mahler and Messiaen.
This past holiday season, I sang in Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors at Theatrical Outfit here in Atlanta. For our fall Opera Scenes program, I had the title role in the first act of Barber's Vanessa. I have been fascinated by my study of 20th-Century music in these opportunities.
My voice has changed a lot (for the better) since I began studying with my current voice teacher, Ms. Hartgrove. We have discovered that my instrument is larger and more powerful than I ever could have imagined. Before, we thought I might be a lyric or spinto soprano, but as it turns out, I am a dramatic soprano. I will eventually sing works by Wagner and Strauss (and if that doesn't ring any bells, it is some LOUD music). This is exciting news, however, it means that I must have a lot of patience because realistically my voice needs several more years for development before I can sing professionally.
That is the general update for now- I hope to visit more often with details about school and my recital repertoire...
